Rhubarb & Revenge: Book review

Unplug, unwind . . . and uncover a killer.

Rachel Kent has poured her heart and soul—and every last dime—into restoring her beloved grandmother’s 150-year-old farmhouse into the Yesteryear B&B, a tech-free retreat nestled in the peaceful Michigan countryside. At the Yesteryear, guests trade in their screens for long walks in the woods, quiet conversation, and the slow pace of simpler times.

But the grand opening goes from charming to chilling when Rachel stumbles across a corpse beneath a rhubarb leaf in the garden, a pair of her great-grandmother's antique gardening shears sticking out of the victim’s back.

In between tending to her guests and unearthing long-hidden family secrets, Rachel must rely on her instincts and a knack for nosiness to track down the killer. As motives sprout and tempers flare, it’s clear someone is willing to do whatever it takes to keep their misdeeds buried deep—along with anyone who gets too close to the truth.

Book Review

Cozy describes the rural Michigan farmhouse setting. It also describes the feeling you get as you meet the heroine, Rachel, and the quirky cast of characters connected to her cellphone-free Yesteryear B&B. At the heart of it all is a classic "whodunit" that kept me guessing right up until the big reveal. Well done. Along the way there's plenty of family drama, touches of humor, and a splash of romance. It's a light, easy read one could describe as part Hallmark move, part "Murder She Wrote." Just plain fun.

This first installment of the series aptly sets the stage for more intrigue to come. Because guests may give up their cellphones, but they can't give up the personal baggage that fuels compelling subplots. And Rachel? She has a knack for stumbling onto dead bodies. Can't wait to see what happens next!

We lived in Michigan for many years and this is a great look at the state.
